$38,400 to be exact. Lets go through the price break down of the newest member of BMW’s dysfunctional family.

There are only 2 trims to choose from. Both of them BMW calls “Designs” instead of trims. The Standard Design and the M Sport Design. The Standard Design is just a base X2. It comes with BMW’s 2 liter twin turbo 4 and awd is the only option. 18’ wheels with all season tires are also standard.

From there you can choose not from packages, but from Tiers. There are 3:

Simplicity: is just pretty much the standard features and comes with a rearview camera, led headlights with cornering lights, a power tailgate and ambient interior lighting that has 6 different colors.

Convenience: brings the cars price up to $40,750 and includes Universal garage-door opener, Auto-dimming rearview mirror, Power-Folding Mirrors, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 1-year All Access Subscription, Auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, Comfort Access keyless entry, Panoramic moonroof, Lumbar support

Premium: Brings the price up to $43,350 and includes the Convenience tier features plus Remote services,a HUD, real time traffic info, and navigation with what might be an annoying touch pad controller.

I selected both since it seems to be pretty spartan without these things. One of the things I do like about BMW is the availability of color options (if you are prepared to pay for them). On the X2 there are 10 exterior color choices. Alpine White and Jet Black are no cost. All the other 8, including the funky yellow and orange colors, are $550 options. I choose the yellow, which BMW calls Galvanic Gold Metallic (why do they have to be so extra?).Adding that took the price to $43,900.

There are 3 wheel options. Two 18’ wheels and one 19’ wheel option which is $600. Only one of the 18’ options and the 19’ are run flats. I stuck with the non run flat 18’ option since run flats tend to give crap ride quality.

There are 6 interior color choices. In typical cheap ass BMW fashion, the first 2 choices are leatherette which I find unacceptable in a vehicle that’s over 40 grand. Out of the color choices there are red and brown leather options which I found nice. But what’s even worse about the choices is that choosing any option besides the leatherette seats is $1450. So I choose jet black which took the price to $45,350.

There are 4 interior dash trims: black high gloss, oak with a pearl chrome accent, fineline wood trim with a pearl chrome accent which looks like the oak but darker, and brushed aluminum with pearl accent. Every one besides the standard high gloss is a $350 option. I choose. I choose the aluminum. Price so far? $45,700.

There are only 2 proper packages for the X2. The first is a drivers assistance pack for $700. It includes the usual suite of driver assistance aids. Adding that lets the option of adding active cruise control with stop and go become available for another $1,000. I added it. The second package is the Dynamic Handling package for $600 which includes M Sports steering and Dynamic Damper Control. I added this as well. But doing so required another $600 in adding on the 19’ wheel. Both of these packages and the 19’ wheel took the price to $48,700.

There are 4 options that frankly for the price, should be standard or included in a package. A wireless charging hot spot? $500.Apple Carplay? $300. Harmon Kardon Surround Sound? $875. Park distance control? A wtf $800. Why isn’t this included with the other drivers aids? With all of those added, the finally price for the standard X2 ballooned to $52,170 and that includes the $995 destination and handling.

The M Sport Design starts at $43,050. It only has the option of the Premium tier. I added that. It also comes with the ability to select the cool blue M color for $550.There is also a 20’ wheel option you can choose on this trim for $600.I selected that as well.Interior leather color choices are the same with the addition of Black with Blue highlight M sport leather for $1450.

M Sport Interior

Trims there is a unique carbon fiber look trim that’s aluminum with a hexegon pattern. Adding the same packages and options as the standard trim, all in an M Sport X2 $53,670. And for that price there are way more appealing options both in performance and interior space. What I dont like about the X2, aside from its size and being a crossover, is the fact that to get anything out of it, you have to pretty much spend at least $45 grand to get features that should be standard or not so much. What do you guys think of the pricing?

I am all in favor of punishing people buying crossovers by jacking up the prices. $53k gets you a 340i in sedan-land.

Exactly. This thing would be a no go for me across the board. At 38, the base model is too spartan to be interesting, and then if you add any options to make it interesting, the price rises to fast and too much and then it just doesnt make sense.

Sure, but since the 340i starts $10k higher than the X2, at $53k they will not be comparably equipped.

All BMWs have a large (but not Porsche-like) number of options to choose from.

The X2 follows the same pattern as the X4 and X6 in that you have to pay more for a swoopier but less practical version of the X1/X3/X5.

That’s one thing they have over the competition, the options and color choices. But it sucks you have to be over a grand for real leather on a vehicle that’s over 40 thousand dollars.

At $53k you can get an M-sport with nav, HUD, premium sound, Heated front seats, leather seats, and your choice of an 8-speed auto or a 6-speed manual and one of the premium colors. Not to mention you have an extra 100 hp and 70 torques.

A 330i equipped to the same spec of your $53k X2 is within $1k.

Personally I’d take the 340i specced as above, but swap leatherette in and add PDC, blindspot, and rear window shades at $55,025(with a manual of course).

Woohoo! More yellow! Yellow all the cars!!!!

I need to update my yellow car list this weekend. I think it is still stuck in 2015.

Yes, there are better and worse values in the BMW lineup.

The $53k X1 is everything. An X2 with your $55k 340i options is $48k, and if we’re comparing like for like, xDrive would add another $2k to the price of the 340i.

What I think about the pricing? BMW has created a new cash cow. It will be gobbled up by consumers and BMW’ profits will soar. Less is more, and with a crossover like this you buy less car for more money.
